Lady Captain's Blog 2009
Wed 27th Jan
Well that's it.  My year as Lady Captain is over.  On Sat we had our Captains Farewell which was a very enjoyable evening although tinged with a little sadness for me as it was my final function as LC.  Last night was our Ladies AGM where Chris was elected as our new Lady Captain.  My congratulations go to Chris and I hope she has as much fun in her year as I have had in mine.  I have had a wonderful year and am very proud to as served as Lady Captain.  I hope I did  a good job.  With that I will sign off from my Lady Captains blog.  I hope you have all enjoyed reading about my year and I wish you all the best for the new golfing year.
New Years Day 2010
I can't believe it has been a year since I started writing my blog, but here I am again reporting on a fabulous New Years Eve at the Golf Club.  I am very impressed that the past Lady Captains managed to carry me out of the room and I am sure it was much easier to carry netball lady back in.  Chris and Robbie looked great all dressed up and they both seemed to be having a great time.  The whisky went down the hatch and we all celebrated the new Year with our friends. It really was a brilliant evening.  Happy New Year to you one and all.
Wed 16th Dec
I have been very busy over the last 2 weeks.  Last Tues we played the Sheila Eardley Trophy.  It is the first time I have played golf for ages and although it was very wet under foot it was great fun.  The winner was Nicky Goode with 20pts.  Sheila's daughter Sybra came along to present the trophy and joined almost 30 of us for lunch.  It was a lovely day.  Last Saturday was  very busy day for everyone at the club.  We held our Sherry Morning and presented a cheque for £1800 to Andy Lange, the ward manager from the Childrens Ward at Leighton Hospital.  We were all delighted to have raised such a large amount of money.  In the afternoon there was a childrens party for over 50 children and in the evening we had our Carol Service and Silver Band.  The whole day was very busy but totally brilliant.  It was wonderful to see so many people and to share the Christmas spirit with all of them.
Tues 1st Dec
Rob and I escaped for the weekend and had a Golf Club free time!  We went to Dusseldorf for the weekend to visit Rob's older brother, Ian.  We flew out on Friday and came back on Sunday evening.  It was great.  The Christmas markets are in full flow in Dusseldorf and we had a great day on Sat wandering around the markets and drinking gluvine.  Ian recomended that we try it wth a drop of Ameretto.  Lovely!  It was really nice to see Ian and Marlies and have a short break ready for the busy Christmas weeks to come.  I am really looking forward to all the festivities.  I went to the club for lunch today and all the decorations have been put up.  It looks very festive.
Sun 22nd Nov
What busy couple of weeks!! Last Saturday it was Presentation Evening.  Chris , Nicky and I spent the afternoon preparing the prize table,  and although I say so myself, it looked fantastic when we had finished.  It was great to see the club house packed with all the prize winners.  We started with the medals end ended the evening with the Player of the Year Awards.  The junior award went to Joe Armitt and I was delighted to win the Ladies award.  The mens Player of the Year is always chosen by the Captain.  This year the Captain surprised everyone by awarding the prize to all the men who had played for the team during the year.  It is the first time the men have ever won the league and it seemed fitting that the award went to them.  Everyone was delighted.  Yesterday evening was the annual club dinner.  It was very enjoyable evening with a very nice meal, thanks again to Joanne and her staff.  They really do look after us very well.  We were joined by the President of the the Cheshire Union, John Kidd who kept us all amused with his after dinner speech.  We also heard from the Catpain and Peter Bozon, the Captain of Astbury Golf Club. I can hardly believe that we are already at the end of November and my time as Lady Captain is almost finished.  This year has gone by so quickly and I will try my best to enjoy the little bit that is left.
Wed 12th Nov
Holiday was fantastic but over all too quickly.  We enjoyed a weeks diving in the Red Sea and were very lucky to see some Oceanic White Tip sharks.  They are amazing creatures and to have such a close encounter with them was just incredible.  It seemed like we had only just arrived when it was time to leave.  On Sat when we go home we went to a Candlelight Supper at the Club.  This suited us just fine as there was no food in our house.  We had a great evening and a lovely meal.  I think winter has finally arrived and since we have been home the weather has been terrible so I don't think there will be much golf for me.  Its just too cold!!  Just in case you are wondering, that is me in the photo!
Wed 28th Oct
The first week for a long time with no golf!!  It is actually nice to have a week off but there are still lots of things to do.  On Wed we were in the monthly quiz and as usual we were not very good but enjoyed it non the less.  On Sat the Gents went out for their winning the league party.  It sounds like they all had a great night and there were some rather sore heads on the Sunday.  They deserve a good night out!  Yesterday I had a Charity afternoon tea for the ladies.  It was a lovely afternoon and we all enjoyed lots of sandwiches and very nice cakes.  It was great to spend an afternoon with a cup of tea and a good chat.  Rob and I are off on holiday tomorrow and are really looking forward to a break for a week and hopefully some excellent diving.
Tues 20th Oct
I really don't know where the time goes!  The golf season is supposed to be drawing to and end but I seem to be busier than ever.  On Wed 7th October we played the Silk Trophy, which is the Ladies v the Seniors.  The weather was great and we all had lots of fun.  Unfortunately the men were a bit too good for us on the day and we lost 4-1, although nearly all the matches were very close.  On Sat 10th was the rearranged Mixed Open which was blessed with much nicer weather than the original day in July!  Again lots of fun and the winners with an amazing 46 points were Nicky Goode and Phil Weir.  Last weekend was yet more mixed gold with the Gents invite Ladies.  I really can't believe that we have been so lucky with the weather as again we were blessed with sun shine.  For the second week running the winning score was 46 points!!  Unfortunately not from the Capatin and I but the winners were Pauline Seaman and Will Doorbar.  A very busy but fun filled couple of weeks.
Sun 4th Oct
I think I need a sleep!!  Last Sat we had a soul and mowtown evening at the club with the wonderful Lloyd and Slyvester.  What a wonderful evening.  The club was rocking into the wee small hours and we all had a great time.  On Sunday lots of the ladies headed off to Hill Valley for England v Wales Ryder Cup.  I am delighted to say that the England Ladies won by lots.  It was great and we all partied until the small hours on Sunday evening.  On Sunday our men also beat Astbury in the Congleton Ryder Cup.  Excellent!!  By Tues I was exhausted.  On Sat we played the Medal Broch which was won by Margaret Shenton with a net 66.  That was the last ladies competition of the year.  I can't believe that another competition season has come to an end.  We still have some fun golf to come but it seems that winter is on its way already.
Wed 23rd Sept
Another busy golfing week.  At the weekend we had the Presidents competitions.  The ladies played on Sat and the competition was won by Kath Roberts with 36 points.  On Sun the gents played and Dave Miller won their competition.  On Sun evening we joined the President for a buffet and the prize presentation.  The President had made wooden bowls from the trees which have been felled on the course during the year.  What lovely prizes.  Thanks to the President for his generosity.  Yesterday the ladies played their final medal of the season.  I was really pleased to play very well and won the comp with a nett 65.  This also means that I get 12 player of the year points and win the Player of the Year Award.  I am delighted.  I must also send my commiserations to Nicky Goode who came second in the player of the year after a very close run race.  It could have gone either way yesterday!
Wed 15th Sept
I have had a great golfing week.  Not had one of those for a while so I am very pleased.  Last Tues we played the 13th Medal.  For the first time in ages I played really well and managed to win the a net 70 from Chris Bennett who had a 71.  I was extra pleased as it means I get some more player of the year points.  It is very close at the top between me and Nicky and there are only 2 more events to go so every point is valuable.  N Wed Sue Fletcher and I played the final of the Ladies Foursomes against Janet Hopkins abd Carol Freemantle.  Chris refereed for us and a couple of ladies came out to watch.  It was great fun and Sue and I managed to win.  We are both delighted!!  On Fri we attended the EGM which went well.  There will be a club newsletter soon explaining everything that was voted upon for those who were unable to attend. On Sunday it was finals day at the club.  All the finals were played in a great spirit and there were some very close matches.  The Clark Cup final was between Janet Hopkins and Chris Negus.  It was a very close match which Janet won 2&1.   My congratulations go to all the winners and commiserations to all the runners up.  It was a great day.
Tues 8th Sept
For the first time all year I have not played golf for a whole week!!!  Rob and I maanged to escape to Ludlow for a couple of days over the Bank Holiday weekend and we had a very nice time.  I think we needed a little rest ready for the busy weeks to come.  While I was away the Ladies played the 4th Silverspoon Competition which was won by Sue Hyland.  Last Sat was our annual Ladies Open.  It was a great day and I must say a huge thanks to Sue Massey and her helpers who did a wonderful job of organising everything.  72 ladies played on the day in pleasant weather and there we some good scores.  I played with Marg Haddon and we scored 39 points which we were very pleased with but unfortunately was not good enough for a prize.  The winners were Jane Antrobus and Bev Scholes from Ashton under Lyme golf club.  A super day all round.
Wed 26th Aug
Time really does seem to be flying by.  Last week the Ladies enjoyed an exchange day with Knutsford Golf Club.  On Tues the Knutsford ladies came to Congleton and on Wed we went to Knutsford.  The weather was fantastic which made a lovely change.  Everyone had a great day and we had a fun team competition which was won by Sue DLetcher, Mary Wellwood and Margaret Biddle.  Well done all.  During the last week all sections of the club have been playing for the Centenary Trophies.  Rob and I were delighted to win the mixed trophy for the 4th time in 7 years.  How many times do we have to win it before we get to keep it?!!  The Ladies Trophy was won by Lucy Suchland who was delighted.  Today I have played Chris Negus in the semi final of the Clark Cup.  Chris played great and I am gutted to have lost but it was certainly the right result on the day.  Well done Chris and good luck in the final.  Chris will be playing Janet Hopkins who beat in Kath Roberts  in what I understand was a very close match.  Good luck to both the finalists and congratulations on making it that far!  Quiz night tonight.  I wonder how bad we will be this time.  Never mind it is always fun.
Tues 11th Aug
What a wonderful week I have had.  On Wed Sue Fletcher and I played Nicky and Chris in the semi final of the ladies foursomes competition.  It was  wonderful match and very close all the way round.  We were 1 down and managed to win the 18th to take the match down the 19th hole.  I think the nerves got to all of us but when we eventually got to the green Sue holed a 20 foot put to win the match for us.  It was a shame that anyone had to loose but we were delighted it was not us.  We have never been to the final before so that's great.  On Saturday it was the annual Summer Ball.  What can I say.  It was a fantastic evening.  I must add my thanks to the committee for all their hard work  It certainly paid off.  The meal was lovelly, the music great and the wine very nice!!  Perhaps I drank a little too much of it but never mind.  It was wonderful.  Sun was rather a quiet day!  Yesterday was my Ladies Away Day.  We went to Runcorn Golf Club.  33 ladies played golf although only 10 of us were daft enough to play an additional 9 holes in the morning.  Well actually 7 of us played 9 holes and 3 managed to go the wrong way and played the 17th by mistake so they played 10 holes.  I will name no names but you know who you are!!  We had a 9 hole individual prize in the morning and a team prize in the afternoon.  I was delighted to win the morning comp and the afternoon was won by Sue Priestley, Mary Scarratt and Sandra McAllister.  Well done.  We were very lucky with the weather as the drizzle only lasted for a few holes.  We then enjoyed a lovelly meal in the evening before heading home on a coach late in the evening.  We must also say thanks to all those lovely men who were waiting to take us all home when we got back to the club.  Sorry guys if we were a bit rowdy!!  What a brilliant day.  I am, however, very tired now and in desperate need of a few early nights!
Sun 1st Aug
What shocking weather we have had this week.  We managed to play our medal on Tues athough the weather was not good.  The Medal was won by Nicky Goode and Chris Negus came second.  I finished 4th which was pretty good.  On Wed I played Carol Dooley in the quarter final of the Clark Cup.  The weather was horrid!!  We got terribly wet and only just managed to get round 18 holes.  By the time we had finished the course was closed but we just about finished.  I was delighted to win 1up on the 18th.  We were both pleased that we managed to finish and really did not want to play any more holes.  The rain continued for the rest of the week so unfortunately the course has been closed all weekend.  Yesterday was supposed to be the Mixed Open but once again rain and the course was closed so no golf for us this weekend.  Lets hope that the sun will shine this week.  On a bright note I got my new car this week.  It is great and I am really pleased with it!
Sat 25th Jul
Gosh these weeks do fly by.  The week after Lady Captains Day was very busy.  On the tues the ladies held a beauty evening.  Thanks must go to 8th Planet Beauty who did all the beauty treatments on the evening.  Everyone had lots of fun and we all learnt alot about what we should be doing to look after ourselves.  On the Wed I attended the Past Lady
Captains Dinner.  Unfortunately they had been unable to play golf as the course was closed.  The wonderful english summer stikes again!!  The evening was really nice just not presentation!  On
Thurs the North Staffs Ladies Alliance were at the club and kindly invited me to dinner.  More food,  I really will have to stop eating.  My golf seems to have gone off the boil a little over the last few weeks as I don't have time for any practice.  We have played the Charter Cup which was won for the second year running by Sue Fletcher, and the Silver Jubilee Trophy which was won by Sue Massey.  Perhaps you need to be called Sue to win in July!!
Wed 8th Jul
What can I say about my weekend.  Lady Captains junior Challenge on Saturday and Lady Captains Day on Sunday.  It was all amazing!!  On Sat I had 18 juniors playing in my competition.  There were 7 from the championship with handicaps over 36.  They played 12 holes Stableford and there were some brilliant results.  The winner was Josh Horan who scored an amazing 35 points and reducded his handicap from 54 to 47.  11 players from the Premiership played an 18 hole medal which was won by Junior Captain Jack Wilson with a net 63.  Superb scoring.  After the golf we all enjoyed sandwiches and chips.  It was fantastic to see so many young people playing golf.  The future of our club is in very good hands!  It was also great to see three girls playing and well done to Jess Imroth who came second in the stableford competition.  On Sunday the Ladies played a Par competition.  I am not sure if the format was too popular but I like to give them a challenge.  The weather was great for most of the afternoon although the first couple of groups did have a small shower to contend with.  After the first nine holes I had a halfway house and everyone seemed to enjoy the ginger bread and cookies.  I really enjoyed seeing everyone go through and watching them all play golf.  In the evening we all enjoyed a meal in the club and I was joined by my brother, The Captian and the President.  The evening was completed with the presentation.  It was great to see a real cross section of the ladies winning prizes.  The winner of the day was Sue Booth who was 1up and amazed that she had won.  It really made my day to see the delight on her face.  It was Sue's first major victory.  Well done Sue.  When we got home I spent another hour opening all the cards and gifts.  It is so kind of everyone to gove me such generous gifts and I had lots of fun opening them all.  I think everyone must think I am an alcoholic!!  I recieved 11 bottles of wine.  Fantastic!!  The wine rack is now overflowing and I look forward to enjoying each and everyone of them.  A huge thank you to everyone who gave me a present.  It was a brilliant day and one I will remeber for the rest of my life.
Wed 1st Jul
I think I have played too much golf!  Last week I played Sat, Sun, Mon and Tues.  Brilliant round on Sat with a 64 but I was pipped by Nicky who had an even better round of 63.  Her timing was great as I played her in the Clark Cup on Sun.  It was very close match which I won 2 and 1.  Very pleased about that.   On Monday I played for the Ladies team at home to Lymm.  I lost but the team managed a win which is a great result.  On Tues we played a Silverspoon Comp.  I think I was golfed out by then as I did not play very well.  The comp was won by Kath Roberts.  It is great this year to see so many different players winning the competitions.  On Sunday it was Captains Day which was won by Pete Hopkins.  It was a beautiful day and we joined the Captain for a buffet before the presentation on Sunday evening.  I am now busy preparing for Lady Captains Day.  I hope the weather is kind to us but I am sure we will have a great day whatever the weather sends to us.
Sat 20th Jun
I have not had a great week as I have had a stinking cold all week.  Typical I get a week off work and feel rubbish for most of it.  On Tues I dragged myself out for the Ladies Invitation.  I was playing with the Lady Captain from Astbury.  We played pretty well and mananged to get 40 points which we were quite pleased with.  However the weather was beautiful and lots of people played some great golf.  Commiserations to Margaret Brindley and Muriel Fraser who got 46 points and missed out on a prize!  The winners were Sue Hyland and Karen Watson with 48 points.  What a fantastic score.  Everyone had a great day.  I have spent the rest of the week feeling a bit sorry for myself but am now feeling alot better.  This morning I played in the 7th Medal.  I am really pleased as I played the best golf I have ever played in my life!  Not sure what happened but it was great!  Perhaps the rest all week has done me good!!
Mon 15th Jun
Another busy week goes by.  Tues was the 6th Medal.  Well done to Di Watson who won and reduced her handicap by a shot!  On Tues evening I hosted a rules evening.  We had great fun and much discussion about some of the questions I had set.  After a fun quiz of 18 holes the winners were Marj Haddon and Sue Fletcher.  I hope all those ladies who attended learnt something new.  On Wednesday I joined the friendly team for an away fixture at Reaseheath Golf Club.  The weather looked a bit ropey but I managed to get round in the dry.  Unfortunately the same can't be said for the rest of the team.  The match was halves 2-2 and we enjoyed a very nice tea after the game.  Lady Captain informed me that she had to do all the catering!!  Good job that is not me as we would all be having MacDonalds!!  Wednesday evening was Ladies Committee meeting.  That was a busy day.  On Saturday we played the 5th Medal which was won by Sue Priestley and I came second. Well done Sue!  Finally today I took a day off work and played for the team away at Warrington.  It was lovely day and played in a great spirit.  Unfortunately we got beat but the course was great and we all tried our best.  Sorry no pictures this week but I will have the camera out tomorrow so there should be some next week.
Sun 7th Jun
The weather stayed good for us to play the Edith Leech Trophy on Tues.  Miranda won again.  She really is on form at the moment and suffered another handicap reduction.  Two major victories in 2 weeks can't be bad!  On Wed I decided it was a nice day for a round of golf so joined the seniors for thier weekly swindle.  Not sure if they were too impressed to have a lady in their midst but the gents I played with made me very welcome and I certainly enjoyed my round of golf.  Not something I will be doing every week but fun for a change.  Yesterday we were due to play the Charter Cup but the weather got the better of us and torrential downpours closed the course.  On the bright side at least we did not have to get wet!  Not sure when we will fit that in to an already busy calendar but I am sure we will find a slot for it somewhere.
Sun 31st May
What a wonderful change to play golf in the sunshine!!  Last Saturday we played Ladies invite Juniors.  It was great fun and there was some very good golf played.  The winners were Sue Hyland and Tom Johnson with 40 points and runners up were mother and son team of Nicky and Jack Goode with 39 points.  On Saturday evening I had a very pleasant evening at the club with one of our Candlelight Dinners.  The meal was excellent but I really must stop eating!  On Tues the Ladies played the Coronation Foursomes.  Well done to Liz Yates and Hilary Dawson who ran out as winners.  Yesterday was, unfortunately not such a good day.  We played Ashton under Lyme in the Bell Cup.  They came with a very good team and were just too good for us on the day.  Everyone played very well and there were alot of close matches.  We are all rather disappointed but it was a great match played in a very good spirit and beautiful weather.  Never mind, we will just have to try again next year.  At least we have not got wet this week.  Long may it last.
Fri 22nd May
I keep trying to update the blog but never seem to have time!!! Lots of things have happened since my last update.  Tues 5th was our Ladies Spring Meeting.  Fortunately the weather was not too bad.  The ladies who played in the morning got rather wet but the rest of us stayed reasonably dry.  It was a great day which was won by Janet Hopkins and her guests and I came second with my Sister in Law, Ang and friend, Sue.  Huge thanks to Chris Bennett who did a great job of arranging the day.  Tues 12th May was the 4th Medal,  more rain!! but I dropped my handicap to 10 so was delighted.  In the evening we had the Ladies Dinner which was attended by 51 of us. Click here to see lots of photos.  It was wonderful to see so many of the ladies in the club house and we all had a wonderful evening.  Not sure all this eating is doing too much for my waist line but never mind.  I am having lots of fun!   On Wed 13th I was invited to play in Astbury invitation with Gill the Lady Captain.  We have never played together before and were both pleased to manage a respectable 37 points.  Perhaps we will be a little better when Gill joins me at our invitation in June.  At least we did not get wet.  On Sat 16th there was a Karaoke evening at the club.  I was somehow persuaded to sing!  It is no wonder it has been raining ever since.  I am terrible!!  Never mind, we had lots of fun.  This was followed in Sunday by the Ladies invite Gents competition.  Unfortunately it had to be reduced to 9 holes because the weather was terrible.  I played with the Captian and we had a very respectable 20 points.  The comp was won by Nigel Moxon and Barbara Simons.  We all enjoyed a great meal afterwards and it was a very enjoyable day despite the awful weather!  On Tues we played the Coronation Trophy, our first major of the season.  Unfortunately we once again got wet.  I really hope this is not going to become a theme of my year.  Miranda Milner won with 37 points and I came second.  It is Mirandas first major victory and I am sure she is delighted.  I managed to come second and am pleased to continue to play good golf despite the weather!  My year continues to be busy with lots of meetings to attend but I am enjoying the challenge and look forward to playing golf in the sun at least once this year!!
Tues 5th May
I have had an excellent weekend at Breadsall Priory with 14 of our ladies.  We went on Sun and played 18 holes followed by a very good meal on Sun night and another 18 holes on Mon.  We were very lucky with the weather.  Sunday was lovelly and sunny if not too warm.  On Mon we woke to pouring rain and were all rather worried about getting soaked.  Just before 11am the rain stopped and although it stayed cloudy, cold and windy there was no further rain.  Very lucky!  Margaret Shenton won the overall prize and Karen Watson was second.  Well done ladies.  Sundays evening meal was great and we had a good laugh with a gents golf society who were sat at the next table in the restaurant.  I have taken lots of pictures of the weekend.  Please click here to see them.

Sat 2nd May
Another crazy week has gone by already!!  Monday I attended a Cheshire County Golf Partnershp meeting at Sandiway Golf Club.  Very interesting and I am sure we will benefit as a club from this initative in the future.  Tues evening was Ladies committee and on Wed Management committee.  Sometimes feel like I spend most of my days at the golf club!  On Tues morning I played in the 3rd Medal and won!!  I am very pleased and lucky to escape the rain on the day.  Yesterday we had a wonderful time as we attended the Blessing of the Captians recent marriage.  The Captain looked very dashing and Andrea his beautiful new wife was radiant!  It was a very happy day and wonderful to be able to share it with the happy couple.

Sun 26th Apr
What a busy week I have had!!  Tues I played (not very well) in the Dale Young Trophy.  The competition was won by Sue Hyland with a fantastic score of 45 points.  I am sure she is delighted although not so pleased with the 6 shot handicap reduction!! Thursday evening I attended the mixed past captains dinner.  A very pleasant evening.  The hilight of the week was the Bell Cup on Saturday.  Unfortunately I had to go to work so was unable to play but the ladies did me proud.  The match was tied at 3 each with just Sue Massey left on the course.  She was 2 down with 3 to play and managed to win on the 1st extra hole!!  Brilliant.  A great result for the ladies.  Roll on the next round.  Last night there was a disco evening which was excellent.  A really nice meal and lots of dancing.  Great fun.
Sun 19th Apr
Sorry there has not been any update for a while but we have been on holiday.  Nothing golf related for almost 3 weeks!  The week before holiday was very busy with lots of meetings, a quiz and a candlelight supper which left no time for an update.  Rob and I have been to Malaysia diving and have had a wonderful time.  If you would like to know more about it have a look at our diving pages over the next week where we will post a trip report and lots of photos.
Sun 22nd Mar
We played our first qualifying competiton of the year yesterday.  I won!!  The score was not great but in everyones defense it pretended to be sunny and warm but it turned out to be cloudy, windy and absolutely freezing.  The cropped trousers were definately not a good idea but at least I was not alone with blue ankles!!  Well done to Sue Fletcher who came second in long trousers, sensible lady!
Thurs 19th Mar
These weeks certainly do go by quickly.  Last Tues we played a fun stableford competition.  The weather was kind to us and I managed to come second so was rather pleased about that.  On Sat there was a St Patricks Day dinner.  There were only about 35 of us there but we all had a great time.  The food came with an Irish theme, sausages, potatoes and so on, and was really nice.  Some how I ended up wearing a silly hat but it is all part of the fun!  I think everyone had a great time.  On tues we played another stableford competition.  Unfortunately the golf was not so good this week.  I had a birdie at the first and it was all down hill after that.  Never mind there is always next week.  I must mention the winner, Sue Hyland, who had a fantastic game and scored 45 points.  Well done Sue!!  I have only attended 1 meeting this week,  which seems to be the quietest week I have had for a while but next week I am at the club every night so that will make up for the quiet one this week!!
Sun 8th Mar
Another busy week has gone by.  Sadly on Monday I attended the funeral of a Past Lady Captain Sheila Eardley.  Sheila was Lady Captain when I joined the club and will be missed by all her friends and family.  On Tues I marked the final handicap card for Maggie.  It all started off very nicely until the 12th when the rain started and never stopped.  It was like a monsoon.  We soldiered on and completed the 18 holes.  If that did not put Maggie off nothing will!  Saturday was a very busy day.  In the morning I played in our winter stableford comp and finished 2nd. I played pretty well and the weather was nice.  All good for this time of the year.  I then went to drop a card off for Maureen and Eric Birch who were celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary.  I only intended to drop the card off but Maureen very kindly invited me in for a drink.  It was a very pleasant afternoon and my congratulations go to the happy couple.  In the evening it was Astburys Club Dinner to which The Captain, Rob and I had been invited.  It was a very pleasant evening and we were very well looked after by all at Astbury Golf Club.  A rather busy but very enjoyable day. I think today I will just have a rest!!
Sun 1st Mar
I seem to have been very busy with meetings for the last 2 weeks.  The management committee have meet twice, house and bar and entertainments!  Lots to discuss to ensure everything runs smoothly for the coming year.  Wed was Quiz night.  Not sure what happened to our team.  We are usually slightly better than average but this time we were not good at all.  Too many questions we did not know the answer to!!  Never mind we had fun but I think must try harder next time.  The ladies held their first official competition of the year last week although we decided that we would only play 12 holes.  Well done to Nicky who won with 25 points. I am looking forward to playing more golf now that the weather seems to be getting slightly less cold!  I would say a little warmer but I still don't think it is warm!
Sun 15th Feb
Yesterday evening was the Captains Welcome.  What a brilliant evening.  We began with a delicious meal.  Once again thanks to Joanne and her staff for looking after us all so well.  We were then entertained superbly by Gena.  What a great voice and she looked lovely.  Well the boys were ceratinly very taken with her.  We danced the night away to a huge varity of music and had a really great time.  I am begining to think that being Lady Captain is just one party after another!  This morning Rob and I managed to play 9 holes to blow the cobwebs away.  The golf was not great but it was nice to have a bit of fresh air after last nights excesses.
The Captain and I start off the dancing.
Wed 4th Feb
I had another wonderful day yesterday!  For those of you who do not know it was my 40th Birthday.  I had lunch at the club and was joined by about 20 of the ladies.  Nicky had arranged a cake and balloons and everyone was very kind.  I received loads of cards and presents and had a briliant time.  Thanks to everyone for making it a brilliant day!

What a day I had yesterday!!  It was brilliant.  I never realised that drive in would be that much fun.  I have to admit to being rather nervous in the morning but a small brandy was just the job to steady my nerves.  We were very lucky with the weather and although it was rather cold I was delighted to see the sun shining as I stepped onto the tee.  But no where near as pleased as I was to see that ball head off down the middle of the fairway.  For those of you who could not make it I managed a very respectable 120m straight down the middle!  Fantastic!!!  The rest of the afternoon was spent eating, drinking and chatting with friends and family.  I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as the Captain and I.  I must also say a huge thank you to all those who gave me cards and gifts.  I was still opening them at 10pm last night.  I never expected anything and to recieve so many massages of good luck was wonderful.  And finally for today another thank you to those who won the sweeps for the Captains Drive and then donated their winnings to our Charity.  We have only been going for a day and already have over £200 in the pot.

Me in action for anyone who missed it, and thanks to Chris Bennet for the pictures.
Thurs 29th Jan
AGM went well and I am now officially Lady Captain!! I really enjoyed the evening and was very pleased that it all went smothly.  It seemed very odd after the meeting to hear people talking to Lady Captain and realise that it was me thay were talking about!  I am sure I will get used to it rather quickly.  For those of you who were there here is the the photo I took.  I hope it is the first of many pictures of my year.

Mon 26th Jan
Saturday was Captains Farewell and Burns Night at the golf club.  It was a great evening and I think Janet and Nigel (Captains 2008)  were a bit demob happy although not sure they can believe that their year is coming to an end.  I am  beginning to get a bit nervous about the week ahead.  Tomorrow is the Ladies AGM where I will (hopefully) be elected as Lady Captain and Sunday is drive-in.  I am sure it will all go well and I am really looking forward to the year ahead but will be alot happier after that little white ball has gone a long way down the middle of the fairway on Sun.  OK I will be happy with anywhere in the air and forward!!
Sun 18th Jan
It has been rather quiet on the golfing front for the last couple of weeks.  Much too cold for me to venture onto the golf course!  I did manage 9 holes on tues with Chris and Nicky.  It was almost pleasant.  At least the rain held off.  Tues evening was the annual Ladies Dinner which was very well attended and created the usual amount of noise.  It always amazes me how a crowd of ladies can make so much noise!  It was a great evening and we all enjoyed a very good meal and even better company.  AGM and Drive in are now rapidly approaching.  I am still hoping for a very cold day so that the ground will be very hard.  At least that way the ball will roll a long way.  I think I am looking forward to it?
New Years Day 2009
What a great evening we all had at the Club last night.  The evening started with an excellent meal, a nice glass of wine and everyone looking very smart in their best clothes.
However in line with tradition things rapidly went downhill after that!  Tradition says that the old Captains are carried out and the new Captains carried in dressed by their peers!  I ended up as Catwoman and Phil (Captain 2009) was Batman.  We both looked pretty silly but the ladies did a much better job of my make up!!  It was great fun.  After a couple of short speaches and a glass of whisky each (we both hate whisky so down in one it went!) we celebrated the new year.  If the rest of our year is a much fun as this then we will certainly have a great time.  Happy New Year to you all.

Captain and Lady Captain of Congleton Golf Club 2009!!  Oh dear.

Christmas Eve 2008
As the beginning of my year as Lady Captain approaches I thought it would be good to keep you all updated with what I am up to.  My first almost official engagement will be on New Years Eve.  I have a great new frock especially for the occasion and am really looking forward to celebrating the New Year with all my friends at the golf club.  Hope you all have a very Happy Christmas.
